An after-hours voicemail greeting should tell callers, in about 20 seconds, that you are closed, when you open again and what they can do now: leave a message, use your website or email, or, for a genuine emergency, call an on-call number. Because it plays every evening and every weekend, it should contain no dates and stay accurate for months. Below are 12 ready-to-record examples for evenings, weekends, lunch breaks and businesses with an emergency service, plus advice on announcing opening hours so that callers actually remember them. Loomira is an AI phone assistant for small and mid-sized businesses that is hosted in the EU and answers calls in the evening and at weekends, when nobody is in the office. If you stay with a recorded greeting, you can tailor any of these texts in our free voicemail greeting generator.

What should an after-hours greeting say?

An after-hours voicemail greeting is the message callers hear when they ring a business outside its regular opening hours. It confirms the business name, says that the office is closed, gives the next opening time and offers a way to leave a message or get urgent help.

A good one covers:

  • Business name first, so callers know they have the right number.
  • When you are open next. That matters more to the caller than your full timetable.
  • A realistic callback promise: "on the next working day" or "by midday", rather than "as soon as possible".
  • One alternative: a website, an email address or online booking.
  • An urgent line, but only if someone really answers it.

Recurring closures and one-off closures need different greetings. For Christmas or a public holiday, switch to one of our holiday voicemail greetings, which name the reopening date.

Which greetings work for evenings and weekends?

The evening greeting runs every weekday, so avoid words like "tomorrow" that turn false on a Friday. If your system allows a separate weekend greeting, it is worth recording one.

Which greetings point callers to your website or email?

Many evening callers only want an answer or an appointment, not a conversation. Give one address and make it easy to say: a short web address or a simple email such as "info at" your domain, and spell out anything unusual.

When should an after-hours greeting include an urgent line?

Only when someone will actually answer it. Trades businesses with a call-out service and property managers responsible for buildings are typical cases. Name examples of what counts as urgent, so your on-call colleague isn't woken for routine questions, and say the number twice. Ask that colleague before you publish their number.

Trades – emergency call-out

Hello, you've reached [Business name]. Our office is closed. If you have an emergency such as [a burst pipe or a power failure], our on-call engineer is available on [on-call number]. That's [on-call number]. For everything else, please leave a message, and we'll call you back on the next working day.

Medical practices and care services need more than an on-call number. Their after-hours greeting must direct callers to the right out-of-hours service and to the emergency number for life-threatening situations. In the UK, for example, the NHS points patients to 111 when their GP is closed and to 999 in a life-threatening emergency; 112 works free of charge throughout the EU; in the US the number is 911. Your professional body can tell you exactly what your greeting must contain.

How do I announce opening hours so callers remember them?

Lead with the next opening time, then the regular hours. Group days ("Monday to Friday") and say times the way people speak ("eight am to six pm", "half past eight"). If your hours change from day to day, don't read out a timetable: give the main hours and refer to your website for the rest. If you serve callers in other countries, add your time zone, for example "Central European Time", and consider a bilingual version.

What should a lunch-break greeting say?

Keep it short and give the exact time you are back, so callers can simply try again. The bigger risk is forgetting to switch it off after lunch, so automate it if your phone system allows.

Lunch break – formal

How do I switch greetings automatically?

Switching by hand every evening fails sooner or later. Many business phone systems and cloud telephony services let you set opening hours once and then play a different greeting, or route calls elsewhere, outside them. Simple mobile voicemail often offers only one greeting; there, forwarding unanswered calls to a service that knows your hours is the practical alternative. In Loomira, for example, you set availability per weekday with a time zone and decide what happens outside those hours: take a message, announce your hours or transfer the call to a number of your choice.

When an AI answers instead of voicemail

Evening callers often want something simple, such as an opening time, a price range or an appointment. A recording can only ask them to wait until tomorrow; an AI phone assistant can answer straight away:

AI assistant – outside opening hours

Hello, you've reached [Business name]. You're speaking with our AI assistant. Our office is closed right now, but I can answer questions about our services, book an appointment or take a message for the team. If it's urgent, just tell me. How can I help?

In the EU, telling callers that they are speaking to an AI is a legal requirement, not a courtesy: Art. 50 of the EU AI Act has required this disclosure since 2 August 2026, and elsewhere it is simply good practice. Our page on AI transparency describes how Loomira handles it.

With Loomira's AI answering machine, after-hours calls are answered, each caller's request is captured with name and number, and you receive a written summary instead of a voicemail to listen to. It cannot fix a burst pipe or replace your on-call service; it makes sure you know about every call by the time you open.
